"This magical, marvelous food on our plate, this sustenance we absorb, has a story to tell. It has a journey. It leaves a footprint. It leaves a legacy..."
The Food Hub is an initiative of RDA ACT. After surveying local food producers and food innovators, it recognised the need to directly engage with the food producing community, to act as an advocate, and to help facilitate the aggregation, storage, processing, distribution, and marketing of locally produced food products.
Our goal is to work in concert with food experts, innovators and producers to develop a robust food and agribusiness environment in the ACT and regions. We see Canberra and its regions as a provenance led destination offering unparalleled opportunities for food investment and innovation.
Food hubs are a crucial part of the local food system, supporting all aspects of the food chain from the grower through to the consumer. They promote entrepreneurship, create local jobs, boost the economy, encourage investment, fight waste, support sustainability and provide food security.
As the demand for locally sourced foods rises, food hubs can play an important pay in building the economy by:
* helping the smaller producers successfully transition from farmers market to grocery stores, restaurants and other food businesses;
* helping food innovators develop, scale up and market their product on the local, national and international stage;
* filling the gaps in food system infrastructure, and
* helping with consumer education.
To significantly increase the amount of locally and sustainably produced food that is consumed in ACT & surrounding regions using processes and facilities that are as environmentally sustainable as possible and with an ethical business model that aims to provide value to its customers, suppliers, employees, owners, the local community, the economics of the region, and the environment.
